About

The Homestead is the latest chapter in the long and significant history of Mananga, a former dairy farm located at the northern entrance to the charming rural township of Berry in the NSW South Coast’s Shoalhaven region.

Rich in local history

Mananga plays a significant part in the history of Berry. The property in its entirety is listed as an item of local environment heritage, and lies within a small historic precinct that was the site of the original town of Berry – then known as Broughton Creek. It was the home of the Stewart family, early pioneers of the region who established a thriving dairy farm and the area’s first post office. The family’s original 1864 cottage was succeeded by the current Mananga homestead, an 1894 Federation Queen Anne-style farmhouse designed by renowned Sydney architect Howard Joseland and listed on the Australian Institute of Architects’ Register of Significant Buildings in NSW.

By the water

An Aboriginal word meaning ‘by the water’, Mananga still retains the original mill race used to divert water from nearby Broughton Creek to power the local sawmill until the 1830s. It is one of just two water races left in Australia. The Stewart family were to remain custodians of the property for more than a century. Julie and Matthew Quinn, are the current custodians of Mananga, and your hosts at The Homestead.

Where heritage meets luxe

Since taking over the property in 2018, owners Julie and Matthew Quinn have poured heart and soul into restoring the original Mananga homestead and gardens. They have also undertaken extensive renovations to existing outbuildings, including converting the old silo and cowshed into a rustic yet stylish wedding and events space, as well as a lounge for guests.

The addition of bespoke cottage-style accommodation ideal for couples and small groups is a fresh addition to the property, delivering the ultimate in indulgent luxury getaways while paying homage to the property’s rich history.
